Chapter 13

Tonight.

Mark was going to ask her tonight. He and Clarissa had been speaking every day for more than three weeks, and by now she might be open to his idea. Their phone calls had morphed into long evening conversations on FaceTime, so they could see each other face-to-face and talk properly, without either one of them needing to hurry off to a meeting or appointment.

When he arrived home from work, Mark changed into his running clothes and pounded out ten kilometers on the treadmill in the gym. Then he showered, munched on a chicken salad, and poured a glass of wine. By that time, it was past eight. Clarissa would have made her way upstairs to her apartment and eaten whatever tidbit Leo had saved for her. He sipped the wine and topped it up, needing fortification. Then he FaceTimed her.

"Hi, you."

Her smile and the fondness in her voice made his palms sweat and his heart pitter-patter madly. With how much he'd battled to get past her initial barriers, he hoped he was reading her correctly when he guessed she'd take his suggestion well. He didn’t want to damage their fledgling relationship.

"Hello, sweetie." Baby steps, Mark. Work up to it. "Did you encounter any bridezillas today?"

She laughed, the sound like tinkling bells. "No bridezillas. They were all lovely."

"You make it easy for them."

"And you’re buttering me up. I thought we’d passed that stage."

He'd meant every word. She didn't seem to realize that brides responded well to her because they could tell they had her complete attention and that she wanted to bring their dreams to life. Having been the subject of her focus, he knew it was heady. Addictive.

"You haven't seen flattery yet." He had plenty to say about her clear blue eyes, sweet pink mouth, and the impertinent tilt to her chin, but he sincerely doubted she wanted to hear it. Compliments about her physical appearance seemed to make her uncomfortable. He’d discovered she preferred to be recognized for her business savvy or her personality, which only served to make her more likable.

As if she needed help in that department. Sure, she was a little distant at first, but she was like a coconut, all sweet nectar on the inside once you cracked the outer shell.

“Clarissa,” he said, exhaling long and slow.

“Yes?”

He gathered his courage and took a sip of wine to wet the inside of his mouth. "I'd like to see you again. In person. Can I fly down and visit this weekend?"

A furrow formed between her brows, and she cocked her head. "You want to stay with me?"

Ah, shit. Had he miscalculated? Her frown would indicate so. Should he back down? Rescind the offer? No. Everything inside of him rebelled. He wanted to see her again. Badly. He wanted the chance to hold her. To kiss the spot at the base of her neck and find out whether it was as soft as it looked.

He nodded. "Yes, I do.”

"Okay."

"You—wait. Okay?"

"Yes," she said simply, showing him a glimmer of white when she smiled.
